The Bun Run Saturday 11th September 2021

Sat 11/09/2021

BRAND NEW BEAUTIFUL TRAIL RUN  –  5k & 10k RUN  incorporating The BUN RUN RAMBLE – 5k & 10k walk

Scroll down for the Start list.

This private country estate will be giving access to areas not normally open to the public and providing the opportunity to run (or walk) a 5k or 10k route through its beautiful parkland. Surround yourself in nature and enjoy this journey, either in peaceful bliss or surrounded by friends and family.

Welbeck, nestled within Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, is one of the great traditional landed estates. The course is undulating & includes a few hills from which you can enjoy outstanding views of beautiful English countryside.

The first “Bun Run” will take place on the historic estate of Welbeck, near Worksop, on Saturday 11th September in order to raise funds for The School of Artisan Food’s charitable work. A lot of baking takes place at the School, thus the name of this new annual event!

As a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to artisan food production, the Welbeck-based School of Artisan Food helps people of all skill levels and all walks of life to learn about artisan and traditional food production. As part of this, it works closely with local voluntary groups and enterprises to support the  local community, including unemployed people and refugees.

A portion of the entrance fee to take part in the Bun Run, alongside donations on the day, will help to raise money for bursaries, providing opportunities for upcoming bakers and food producers to study at the School.

10k

The 15,000-acre estate surrounds the historic Welbeck Abbey and the 10k course takes in sweeping views of this magnificent building. The route circuits the park, designed in 1748, and crosses the picturesque great lake out into open countryside. It skims the deer park, where there’s the chance to look out for white deer, and returns via the Abbey.

5k

Meanwhile, the 5km course has a route that includes scenic countryside, skirting ancient woodland, forestry and farmland. The route also takes you past beautiful old lodges, and loops back to the heart of the estate. It’s suitable for all family members who can run 5k or walk 1-1.5 hours – please note, for the little ones, there are a few hills to conquer.

*Please note that Welbeck is a working estate and event participants are asked to remain on the marked route for their own safety and to protect livestock and wildlife. The estate is dedicated to conserving its flora and fauna and parts of the 15,000-acre estate are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

Welbeck’s history

Welbeck sits within an area known as the Dukeries. It gets this name from the four historic neighbouring ducal seats, which at their height covered 88,000 acres. Together the area had all the qualities of a self-contained world.

Welbeck Abbey, within the heart of the estate, was founded as a monastery back in 1153. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the Abbey was bought by Bess of Hardwick’s youngest son, Sir Charles Cavendish. It has since passed through the family and became the country seat to a succession of Dukes of Portland.

Family members included the 3rd Duke of Portland, who was twice Prime Minister, and the 5th Duke of Portland, who was famously known as the ‘burrowing duke’. He was responsible for commissioning an extraordinary range of buildings and a network of tunnels.

Today Welbeck continues to be a working estate and has ancient woodlands and forestry, lakes, farmland and grazing and has some of the country’s most important rural heritage buildings. It’s home to a range of businesses, artists, and food producers as well as The Harley Gallery, The Portland Collection Museum, The Harley Café, Welbeck Farm Shop and The School of Artisan Food.
